On February 6, 2026, Kalashnikov Group announced that TsNIITochMash has started executing a new government contract to produce modernized SR.2M 9×21 mm submachine guns, signaling a decision to sustain a specialized armor‑penetrating close‑quarters weapon in serial production rather than introduce a new platform.
Kalashnikov Group announced on 6 February 2026 that TsNIITochMash has begun fulfilling a new government contract to produce upgraded 9 mm SR.2M submachine guns, continuing a compact weapon line long used by Russian security forces. The move appears focused on sustaining a proven personal defense platform while refining handling, safety, and rapid deployment features rather than introducing a major redesign.

The SR.2M aligns more with the personal defense weapon (PDW) concept than traditional 9×19 submachine guns. Open sources describe it as gas-operated with a rotating bolt, a configuration intended to better manage the pressure of 9×21 mm ammunition and support reliable automatic fire in a compact form. Its magazine-in-grip layout keeps the weapon balanced and controllable during close-quarters movement.
Chambered for Russian 9×21 mm rounds such as SP-10 and SP-11, the SR.2M is designed to maintain effectiveness against soft body armor at short to medium ranges. This gives security units an option more capable than a sidearm while remaining smaller and easier to handle than a full assault rifle.
Modernization focuses on practical improvements, including a folding metal stock with a stronger locking system for faster transition from carry to firing. The weapon measures about 367 mm with the stock folded and 605 mm extended, weighs roughly 1.55 kg without a magazine, and has a stated sighting range of up to 200 meters.
Compared with earlier SR-2 variants, the SR.2M is described as more suited to close-quarters use, with improved external controls and handling features aimed at faster target engagement and better retention. The emphasis is on usability and mobility rather than increased firepower or range.
Its role centers on providing a compact automatic weapon for personnel who cannot carry full-length rifles but still need strong stopping power against protected targets. Likely users include protective units, special response teams, convoy security personnel, and facility defense forces operating in confined environments.
In combat scenarios, the SR.2M is considered a specialist close-range system rather than a general infantry weapon. It is suited to urban operations, trenches, industrial sites, and rapid response missions where mobility and quick target acquisition are critical. With 20- and 30-round magazines and a 200 m effective range, it supports short, controlled bursts in tight engagement zones.
The contract reflects a broader trend in small-arms procurement, where agencies continue investing in niche systems tailored to specific missions. While its specialized ammunition and PDW design may limit interoperability, the SR.2M remains relevant for units prioritizing compact size and armor-penetration capability. The production effort also reinforces TsNIITochMash’s ongoing role in developing pistols and compact weapons within Russia’s defense industry.
